The Path of Courage: Ayurveda and the Responsibility of Our Health – Part 1

There is a moment, often silent, when something inside us awakens. An intuition, a small voice that whispers to us: “There is another way to live.”
We don't always know where that feeling comes from. But if we listen to it, a journey begins. And like every authentic journey, it requires a rare gift: courage.

Ayurveda is not just an ancient medicine. It is a path back to us. It does not promise shortcuts, or quick fixes to eliminate symptoms. Instead, it asks us to stop. To observe. To take care. To take charge. responsibility for our health, day after day.

In a world where we often leave everything to the outside – to the doctor, to the drug, to fate – Ayurveda brings us back to the center. And it tells us:
“You are the keeper of your balance.”

Ayurveda: A Path to Transformation

Following Ayurveda is not easy. Not because it is complicated, but because it is radically honest. It invites you to look at what you put on your plate, but also what you let into your mind. It asks you to notice when you eat, but also Why eat. And above all it reminds you that every action – even the smallest – has an effect.

It's a science, yes. But it's also an art.
The art of living in harmony with the rhythms of nature, with your body, with your feelings.
And this art is learned one step at a time. With sweetness, but also with determination.

The courage to look inside ourselves

Maybe it's easier to rely on a pill. Maybe it's reassuring to think that the fault lies with time, stress, others.
But when you start following the Ayurvedic path, you realize that the body never lies. That every symptom is a message. That every discomfort is a request for attention.

And then you start asking yourself new questions:

  • What is this recurring headache telling me?
  • Why do I always wake up tired?
  • What emotion am I ignoring?

It takes courage, yes. But not the heroic courage of the movies. Rather, a silent courage. The kind that makes you sit and listen, even when your mind wants to escape.

Responsibility is freedom

To learn more about the connection between awareness and health, I recommend reading the article Improving the quality of our life: a question of responsibility and awareness published by AsSIS, the Association for Health Studies and Information.

Many fear the word “responsibility” because they associate it with guilt or duty. But in Ayurveda, responsibility is an act of love towards oneself.

Taking responsibility for your health means recognize your power. You are no longer a victim of events. You are an active participant in your own healing.
It means stopping waiting for someone to “save” us and starting to take care of ourselves, one gesture at a time.

In Sanskrit, the word Swastha indicates the state of optimal health. But its deeper meaning is “established in the Self”.
Being healthy is not just having no symptoms, but be rooted in ourselves.

Small gestures, big transformation

It all starts with small daily choices.
How do you decide to start your day?
What do you eat when you're tired or angry?
What space do you give to breathing, to silence, to sleep?

Even just going to sleep an hour earlier, or choosing to breathe deeply before a meal, is already Ayurveda. It is already courage.

There's no need to turn everything upside down.
Enough start observing. And choose, every day, something that brings you back to you.

And then?

In the next article we will talk about how to recognize the signals of the body, the doshas and the imbalances (vikrit), and how we can use them not to "pigeonhole" ourselves, but to get to know each other again.

Ayurveda, after all, is not a cage. It is a key. And the door that opens… is you.
